I am a 21 year old living in India. I grew up in the 90s. Unlike the rest of the world, India was a much different country back then. It had just started to open up to the world. I grew up with books like Goosebumps, Sherlock Holmes, Aesop’s Fables and such. There were hardly any comic books. The only one’s i had read were Indian. Amar Chitra Katha, Shaktimaan, Chacha Chaudhary and to an extent some disney comics. These were the only ones available back then. I love all of them. By the 2000s, I discovered a local bookshop was selling Superman comic books. They werent in order. Just random issues. There was no continuity whatsoever. If you were lucky, you would get 2 issues which were in order. Thats about it. Thats when my love affair with comics really started. Superman became my firm favorite. It is even now. The fact that i got random issues irregularly made me cherish those comics. I kept them for a good 5-7 years. All this while, from the late 90s to the early 2000s Indian Comic book industry was struggling. Nothing exciting was happening. Amar Chitra Katha disappeared. Chacha Chaudhary came on TV but went away just as fast. Indian Comics were pretty much dead. Even the local bookshop from where i got my Superman Comics, stopped selling them. Then i stopped reading comics for a while. I couldnt read because of school and the next 5 years of college up until my Graduation.
I rediscovered my love for comics after graduation when i saw a resurgence of Indian Comics. All of a sudden, there were these guys publishing comics. Not just Amar Chitra Katha, but several other new players came. Level10 Comics, Vimanika Comics, Holy Cow, Pop culture Publishing, etc. The resurgence was such that now Comic Cons are being held every year. I myself attended the First Annual Mumbai Comic Con. It was superb. It was a rebirth of Indian comics. This rebirth is so strong that it has ensured that it is not going away anywhere in the near future. It has firmly been put in place by people like me, who loved Indian Comics. Not just Mythology, but new and different genres are being explored. Honeymoon Period?
I know we possess enough talent to produce world class comics. We have in the past. And i certainly believe we will keep doing so.
I am not a comic book expert. i dont know the jargon. Although i am learning. And this blog is just that. It is my journal. I want to learn about comics and in the process share it with the world. I will review comic books that i read. Not only Indian, but American and from wherever i can. I was frustrated to see that every comic book review site on the internet is reviewed by experts who have been reading them since they were born. No one reviews it from the perspective of an ordinary reader. I am not an expert. Just an ordinary guy who loves reading a comic book.
